What changed in Plumbline

Every release of the visual testing tool, newest first. Patch notes are written by the engineer who shipped the change.

  1. v5.0.0

Baselines now live in your repository

Plumbline 5 stores approved snapshots as small files under .plumbline/, so every branch carries its own visual baseline and a revert restores the screenshots along with the code.

    • NewBaselines are committed as lossless WebP, about 40 KB per snapshot.
    • Newplumbline review opens the review queue locally on port 4410.
    • ImprovedCapture on a 400-story library dropped from 6m 12s to 2m 41s.
    • FixedSnapshots taken at 125% zoom no longer report a 1px shift on every edge.
  2. v4.12.0

Review diffs by component, not by page

When a shared button changes, you used to approve it on every page it appeared on. The review queue now groups snapshots by component, so one decision covers all of its stories.

    • NewComponent grouping in the review queue, with a count of affected stories.
    • Newplumbline approve --since main approves only what changed on your branch.
    • ImprovedThe diff overlay renders 3x faster on 4K snapshots (median 410 ms to 130 ms).
    • FixedWebfont 404s on Linux runners no longer fall back silently to a system font.

  3. v4.11.2

    Fewer flaky text diffs

A patch release for teams who saw diffs on small text that nobody could see with their eyes.

    • FixedSubpixel antialiasing is ignored on text set below 12px.
    • FixedApproving a snapshot on a closed pull request no longer reopens its check.
    • ImprovedA missing baseline branch is now named in the error, not just “not found”.
  4. v4.11.0

    Token drift reports

Plumbline now reads your design tokens and flags hard-coded values that are almost, but not quite, a token. Most teams find a dozen in the first run.

    • NewDrift report flags colours within ΔE 2 of a token and spacing within 2px.
    • NewA weekly digest per team, sent Monday at 09:00 in the team's time zone.
    • ImprovedUploads resume after a dropped connection instead of restarting the run.

(02) Release spread

Plumbline release notesVersion 5.0.0 ·

Baselines that live next to your code

For four years Plumbline kept your approved screenshots on our servers. That meant a revert restored the code but not the pictures, and two branches could fight over one baseline. In version 5 the baselines move into your repository, and the rest of the release follows from that.

(01)New

  • Baselines are committed to .plumbline/ as lossless WebP, about 40 KB per snapshot, and reviewed in the same pull request as the code.
  • plumbline review opens the review queue on localhost:4410, so you can approve before you push.
  • Per-story thresholds: set tolerance: 0.2% on a chart story without loosening the rest of the library.

(02)Improved

  • Capture on a 400-story library dropped from 6m 12s to 2m 41s on the default 4-core runner.
  • Review queue shortcuts: J and K to move, A to approve, R to request changes.
  • Diffs open at the changed region instead of the top-left of the snapshot.

(03)Fixed

  • Snapshots taken at 125% zoom no longer report a 1px shift on every edge.
  • Stories with an autoplaying video are captured on the first frame, every time.
  • Renaming a story keeps its history instead of starting a new baseline.

Upgrading from 4.x: run npx plumbline migrate. It copies your current baselines into the repository and opens one commit for you to review. Nothing is deleted from our side for 90 days.
